“What is the meaning of this? You can’t just barge in here when we’re having a meeting—” Bao, the Doerallian council leader, sputters as we enter, cutting off when he sees me behind Caldor.

The room falls silent, and all eyes are on the two of us. My mates wanted to come with me, but I explained that it would be better if I did this alone. They want to control me by using my mates, so arriving here with them as backup will just destroy the message I’m here to give—that I won’t be controlled by the council any longer.

Caldor steps to the side so I can fully enter the room, his hands clasped behind his back. He dips his head towards them in a sign of respect, but it seems jerky and off, like he’s performing the motion out of habit. “Council members,” he begins, scanning the room, his eyes landing on his father, “Annalise has an urgent matter to speak to you about.”

They all turn to look at me. Martyn and Nari, the female from Vipos, watch me with an interested, if bemused, expression. However, I can’t help but notice several of the council looking my way with scorn or rolling their eyes—in particular, the sneering male from Vipos who was so adamant that Elijah be guarded the last time I was standing in this room.

He huffs out a breath that sounds more like a snake hissing and dismisses me with a wave of his scaled hand. “I’m sure whatever it is can wait. You can book an appropriate meeting later in the week.”

No. Enough. I threatened to leave before, and while they conceded and allowed Elijah to stay here unguarded, it obviously did not change their view or attitudes towards me. My power reacts to the indignation I feel, bubbling through my veins. It fills the room for a second, and I see the exact moment the council remembers just who is standing here with them, their eyes wide as they shift in their seats. Caldor transfers his weight from one foot to another, glancing at me, and I see the approval in his gaze. It’s gone a second later when he returns his attention to the council, but something settles in my chest, telling me I’m doing the right thing.

“I think not.” My words are directed at the snake-like male, and I pin him with my glare. I let him feel the strength of my power before it retreats, yet it doesn’t sink back into the well within me, instead settling over my skin. It makes me feel electric, alive…powerful.

“I apologise for coming to see you in this manner, but there is something you must know.” I look at Martyn for approval to continue. He dips his head in acknowledgement, and I’m surprised when no one objects.

I push my anxieties down. If I show any sign of uncertainty or worry, they will take it as a sign of weakness. I need them to see me as I am, as the true promessa, and not as a young female they can manipulate.
